You might not recognize some of these platforms, and that's ok! Mastodon, Mbin, and other platforms like it are federated platforms, all of which are connected to create what people call the "fediverse." The principle is the same as email, where there are multiple providers with different urls but users on these different servers can still communicate with one another. This prevents one single person or corporation from owning the entire network, as well as prevents the entire network from going down at once. It also encourages better moderation, because if your instance doesn't have a strong enough content policy, you can just move your account elsewhere! You can learn more here.
